About the course

The Mission of the School of Music at The University of Oklahoma is to advance learning, teaching, scholarly and creative activity, and service. Faculty and students will actively promote and contribute to the teaching profession, discover knowledge as performers and researchers, and enhance the discipline of music through professional service at the national and international levels. Established in 1903, the School of Music was the second School established on the OU campus and has been an Institutional Member of the National Association of Schools of Music since 1931. The only doctoral granting music school in Oklahoma, the OU School of Music will serve its constituents through the artistic and scholarly productivity of its faculty, students and alumni. The University of Oklahoma will award music degrees in the areas of composition, education, musicology, performance and theory.   Why do you want this degree, and why do you want it from OU?

  Three letters of recommendation

  While all three of your letters of recommendation should be from someone who can speak to your ability to be a successful graduate student in a music program, we ask that you consider the following when requesting your recommendations:

  One letter should be from a person who has considerable knowledge about your abilities as a performer, conductor, or composer (e.g.: studio professor, ensemble conductor, chamber coach, etc.).

  One letter should be from a person who can speak to your abilities as a scholar of music.

  If you are applying for a doctoral degree, the Master of Music in Music Theory, or the Master of Music in Musicology, you must also upload a sample of your scholarly writing.

  This sample should not be more than 3 years old.

  Minimum of 5 pages of double-spaced text, not counting bibliography.

  Should represent your best scholarly writing and researching skills in music.

  Should present a complete argument supporting a clear thesis.

  Should feature a consistent method for citations.

  Examples include but are not limited to a critical analysis, a research paper in musicology, music in culture, or music pedagogy, or an article suitable for publication in a recognized scholarly or professional music journal.

  Evidence of the successful completion of two years of full-time music teaching experience at the elementary, secondary, and/or college level, or the equivalent.

  A recent video recording (standard DVD is preferred) of classroom or private instruction, or ensemble rehearsal that demonstrates teaching effectiveness. Audio recordings of ensemble performances that the applicant has conducted may also be sent, but not as a substitute for the video recording. The applicant may request an on-site observation visit by music faculty in lieu of a video recording. The applicant bears all costs.

  Additional emphasis-specific materials or actions as described below:

  Emphasis in Choral Conducting: Applicants interested in an emphasis in choral conducting must provide a video recording (standard DVD preferred) of a choral rehearsal, or may schedule an on-campus interview/audition.

  Emphasis in Instrumental Conducting: Applicants interested in an emphasis in instrumental conducting must provide a video recording of an instrumental ensemble rehearsal, or may schedule an on-campus interview/audition.

  Scoring 79 or higher on the Internet-based TOEFL (iBT)

  Scoring 6.5 or higher on the IELTS.
