About the course

Recent advancements in genomics and diagnostics have revolutionized infectious disease research. Our doctoral students research the root causes of diseases, mechanisms of microbial and parasitic pathogenicity, immunological phenomena associated with infection, and the development of new therapies for patients.

　　The Ph.D. in Microbiology at Howard?s Graduate School prepares students for microbiology and infectious disease research careers. The interdisciplinary program will equip you, like many of our graduates, with the skills to address local and global microbiological research problems. Students interested in studying the root causes of diseases, mechanisms of microbial and parasitic pathogenicity, immunological phenomena associated with infection, and developing new therapies and interventions for the patients that most need them, will find a dynamic research environment at Howard. Our graduates have landed postdoctoral fellowships and faculty positions in the health sciences at top research institutions and universities. How to apply

Entry requirements for Howard University

A cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale is preferred and a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 in major course work is required. Each graduate department may have additional special admission requirements which are noted on this page. Official transcripts must be submitted directly from the Registrar?s Office from ALL colleges and universities attended. GRE Scores (Only official score reports are accepted within 5 years of the test date). Autobiographical Sketch (Personal biography). Three letters of recommendation.

　　TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) a score of 90 on the Internet base (IBT) is required for applicants whose native language is not English. Official TOEFL scores must be sent directly from ETS. The TOEFL test is only waived if the applicant has received a degree in the U.S. In lieu of the TOEFL (if not offered in your country), applicants may submit results from IELTS (International English Language Testing System) with an overall score of a 6.5.
