About the course

The Mathematical Physics Ph.D. degree curriculum focuses on using techniques from mathematics to formulate and solve problems in physics as well as applying insights from physics to the solution of problems in mathematics. The program offers advanced training for students in the overlapping areas of mathematics, theoretical physics, and their applications from a unified point of view and promotes research in the field. How to apply

Entry requirements for Indiana University - Bloomington

A minimum score of 80 on the internet-based IBT TOEFL is required.

  A 300-500 word Statement of Purpose regarding your current goals, plans for your professional career, and reasons for selecting a field of study.

  Three letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with your ability to do scholarly work.

  For the Physics graduate program, scores for both the general and Physics subject section of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) are required.

  Students in the Mathematical Physics Program must be en­rolled in either the Department of Mathematics or the Depart­ment of Physics. Basic preparation should include courses in advanced calculus, linear algebra, modern algebra, complex variables, classical mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, modern physics, thermodynamics, and statistical mechanics. Knowledge of the following fields is desirable: real analysis, differential equations, probability, topology, differen­tial geometry, and functional analysis.
