About the course
The ISB program brings together faculty from many different basic and clinical departments at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Magee-Women?s Research Institute, the Children?s Hospital of Pittsburgh, the University of Pittsburgh Dietrich School of Art and Sciences Department of Biological Sciences, and Carnegie Mellon University. ISB faculty are pursuing diverse and complementary research at the cutting edge of biology and medicine spanning many disciplines. These studies include interrogation into the mechanisms of human disease pathogenesis and the translation of research findings into contemporary clinical practice. State of the art experimental approaches are also being employed for regenerative biology, drug discovery, stem cell therapy, tissue engineering, and the implementation of personalized medicine. The ISB program is designed so that you can get your PhD in as little as four years. Training in the ethics of scientific exploration, instruction in writing grants, and integrated career guidance make you unusually well-prepared to seek postdoctoral training or to take a position in the biomedical industries. How to apply
Entry requirements for University of Pittsburgh
No GREs required! The ISB program is pleased to announce that we will no longer require GREs to be submitted as part of your application packet. All ISB applicants will be judged on their GPA (especially courses within their major), research experience, and letters of recommendation.
Baccalaureate degree from a science, engineering, or mathematics program. Students with degrees outside of these areas who have completed significant course work in the biological sciences are also encouraged to apply.
Written statement that demonstrates evidence of previous research experience and commitment to a career in biological sciences.
Minimum of three letters of recommendation from faculty or scientists with a detailed knowledge of the student's research and/or academic background and potential for independent research. At least one letter must be from a research mentor/advisor.
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). A minimum TOEFL score of 650 (paper), IELTS score of at least 7.50 or iBT score of at least 100 is required for admission to the program.
