About the course

We are an interdisciplinary program with broad expertise in horticultural (fruit, vegetable, ornamental) crop production and the study of plant growth and development and plant interactions with the environment. We are committed to improvement of human life through the cultivation of edible and ornamental crops, and the maintenance of sustainable designed and natural outdoor environments. Specific areas of faculty and student research include floriculture, urban horticulture, nursery production, viticulture, pomology, vegetable production, soil microbiology/metagenomics, resilient biofuels crops, ecological pest management, agriculture and climate change, genome editing for crop improvement. How to apply

Entry requirements for Virginia Tech

Admission to our graduate program is competitive and qualification for consideration does not

  guarantee admission.

  U.S. citizens

  • Graduation or impending graduation from an accredited university or college with a

  Bachelor’s degree

  • A minimum grade point average of 3.0 for the last two years or 60 semester hours of

  coursework

  • The Graduate Record Examination is required for all applicants. The advanced subject area

  test is not required on the Graduate Record Examination. It is expected that applicants will

  have received a minimum GRE score of 156 (new system), 550 (old system) for the verbal

  section and 148 (new system), 600 (old system) for the quantitative section. However, the

  GRE score will not be used as the sole determinant of admission.

  • MS applicants may be admitted on a provisional basis with a minimum grade point average

  of 2.6. Admission on a provisional status is not available to PhD applicants.

  • Positive references indicating aptitude for graduate studies, especially for research

  • Students must have relevant background and course work in the field of interest or be able

  to demonstrate excellent aptitude in the field of interest. Applicants without a relevant

  background are sometimes admitted on a provisional basis.

  • At least one faculty member must be willing to advise the applicant and suitable faculty

  must be available to serve on the advisory committee.

  International students are expected to have the same qualifications as U.S. students. Students from

  countries where English is not the official language must take the TOEFL exam. A score of at least

  550 (paper), 213 (computer) and 80 (internet) is required on the TOEFL.
