About the course
The Department of Geological Sciences provides instruction in multidisciplinary geosciences, including a strong foundation in traditional geology. This includes the study of environmental geoscience, energy exploration, water resources, marine science, paleontology, earth processes and materials, planetary science, natural hazards, and all other major subdisciplines of geology and earth sciences. The department encourages student participation in research and internship experiences. Majors gain extensive hands-on field and laboratory experience unified around a goal to produce both a practical and theoretical understanding of geosciences, enabling them to seek careers in a variety of fields, such as environmental assessment and remediation, geotechnical consulting, and energy and resource exploration. Entry requirements for University of Alabama
Admission to the graduate program in geology is highly competitive. The Graduate School requires (i) a grade point average greater than 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (international grades are converted by the Graduate School to a 4.0 system), and (ii) a Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score at least 300 for (verbal plus quantitative sections) and the GRE score for analytical writing ≥ the 50th percentile or greater for unconditional admission. It takes up to six weeks for exam scores to reach us, so you should take the exams as soon as possible. If your native language is not English, you will also need to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam. The minimum TOEFL score for unconditional admission is 550 for the paper-based test, 213 for the computer-based test, and 79 for the internet-based test. The applicant must have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 overall, 3.0 for the last 60 semester hours in a degree program, or 3.0 for a completed graduate degree program, International English Language Testing System (IELTS): The minimum score for admission to a degree program or for non-degree admission is 6.5.
