About the course

The environment and society concentration addresses the need for training in urban, regional, and environmental analysis and planning, location theory, and environmental impact assessment. Students are exposed to current environmental issues and policies.

  Research at The University of Alabama in urban, regional, and environmental planning includes exploring problems related to housing, conflicting land uses, ecotourism, environmental management, transportation planning, economic development in rural and urban areas, regional planning, exclusionary zoning, and third world planning issues.

How to apply

Entry requirements for University of Alabama

Recommendations for acceptance and assistantships are based on academic records, the GRE, experience, statement of purpose, and references. A BA/BS in geography, environmental science, or a related discipline is normally required for admission into the MS and PhD programs. Admission also requires a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale in previous coursework and a minimum combined score of 300 on the verbal and quantitative sections of the GRE. Under exceptional circumstances, admission may be considered if a student satisfies only one of the two scoring criteria, but has notable experiences and outstanding recommendations.

  Submit official scores from the Graduate Record Examination to the Graduate School.

  Request at least three letters of recommendation in support of your application.

  Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): The minimum score for admission to a degree program or for non-degree admission is 550 on the paper-based TOEFL or 79 on the internet-based TOEFL (iBT). International English Language Testing System (IELTS): The minimum score for admission to a degree program or for non-degree admission is 6.5.
