About the course

The Ph.D degree is a thesis-based program where students are required to complete courses in addition to writing and defending a thesis. Materials Science & Engineering is about unravelling the fundamental principles governing the behavior of materials to enable technologies across a broad range of applications. This includes performance functionalities of all classes of materials across length scale ranging from the macro-scale down to nano-scale. Equivalent of 4 half courses (12 units) beyond the Master?s degree and successful defence of a thesis is required. Candidates are required to pass a Comprehensive Examination and Research Proposal. How to apply

Entry requirements for McMaster University

Master’s degree in Materials Science, Engineering, Mathematics or Physical Sciences.

  Successful completion of a Master’s degree with at least a B+ average

  For admission to the Ph.D. degree program: successful completion of a Master’s degree with at least a B+ average.

  Statement of Interest. Transcript of academic work completed to date. If the final transcript does not show that a completed degree has been conferred, an copy of your diploma is also required. Official copy of these documents will be required if an offer of admissions is made. Letters of Recommendation are submitted electronically.

  Minimum accepted TOEFL scores (as outlined in the Graduate Calendar for the Faculty of Engineering):

  iBT: (Internet Based Test): 88

  Paper Based Test: 550

  Computer Based Test: 213

  The IELTS is also accepted, with a minimum score of 6.5 with a minimum score of 5.5 in each category.
