About the course
Dartmouth engineering researchers work within an integrated community of experts in their fields, unencumbered by departmental divisions. Our faculty and students are versatile thinkers who can define a problem, place it within the broad social and economic contexts, and articulate a clear vision for a human-centered approach toward a solution. Within their engineering sciences degree, students may choose a concentration in materials science and engineering (MSE). The MSE Program Area provides structure and guidance for this concentration in fields such as nano- and bio-materials for health and sustainability, ice material physics for understanding climate change, and computational modeling to design novel materials. Dartmouth engineering PhD students acquire technical depth in their chosen area of concentration while also gaining breadth of knowledge in related fields. Graduates are skilled not only in engineering, but also in problem-solving, communications, risk-taking, leadership and innovation that generates human-centered impact. In addition to courses in applied mathematics and engineering, PhD students undertake a multi-year research project, usually part of a larger multidisciplinary project. These research projects are negotiated with a faculty mentor who sponsors the student in the program. Scholarships - View all scholarships Internships
