About the course
A major research theme at Rice focuses on understanding the composition, structure, dynamics and evolution of Earth’s interior from the core to the crust using a diversity of tools including seismology, petrology, geochemistry, fluid dynamics, and structural geology. Key areas of research include earthquake physics, mantle convection, lithosphere formation and evolution, geochemical differentiation of the mantle and crust, volcanism, plate kinematics, mountain building, basin formation, continent formation/evolution, deep volatile cycling, and mineral resources. In Whole Earth Systems, we explore the exchange of mass and energy between the Earth’s deep interior and its surface. We are particularly interested in the role of the deep Earth in controlling long term climate evolution, the formation of continents, the chemical differentiation of the Earth, chemical and physical weathering, and the origin and evolution of life. At the same time, we are interested in surface effects, such as surface temperature, biology, and fluid-rock interaction, on the dynamics of the Earth’s interior.
