About the course

The Department offers an M.S. and a Ph.D. in Chemistry. The Ph.D. is granted in recognition of breadth and depth of knowledge of the facts and theories of modern chemistry and an ability to carry out independent chemical research demonstrated through submission of an acceptable doctoral dissertation. The M.S. may be earned either through submission of an acceptable Master’s thesis (Plan I) or through an approved program of graduate course work and a comprehensive oral examination (Plan II). A Master’s degree is not a prerequisite for admission to the Ph.D. program.

　　Organic chemistry at UCI includes: the total synthesis of complex natural products, the development of powerful synthetic methods, new reagents, and catalysts, the discovery of new organic and organometallic reactions, the creation of new polymers and materials, the design and synthesis of new antagonists and inhibitors that may ultimately lead to new drugs, the elucidation of biosynthetic pathways and mechanisms, the chemical modification of peptides and proteins to create novel structure and function and elucidate of protein-protein and receptor-ligand interactions. Entry requirements for University of California - Irvine

Hold a bachelor?s degree (or equivalent) from a recognized academic institution with degree standards equivalent to those of the University of California

　　Have a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0

　　Statement of Purpose ? Describe your research interests, including research you have completed and or any papers you have published. Include your career objectives and goals for graduate study.

　　Personal History Statement ? Describe your personal background, including any experiences or challenges relevant to your academic journey. Include how you addressed these challenges in order to achieve your educational goals.

　　Curriculum Vitae ? A breif account of your education, qualifications, and previous experience.

　　Letters of Recommendation ? A minimum of three letters are required.

　　Unofficial Transcripts ? Upload unofficial transcripts for all institutions attended since high school.

　　TOEFL/IELTS ? Required for certain non-domestic applicants. Please refer to International Students/Permanent Residents below for more information.

　　An overall score of 80 or higher is required for admission.

　　A speaking section score of 26 or higher is required for TA eligbility.

　　IELTS

　　An overall score of 7 or higher, with a score of no less than 6 on any individual module, is required for admission.
