About the course

The Department offers an M.S. and a Ph.D. in Chemistry. The Ph.D. is granted in recognition of breadth and depth of knowledge of the facts and theories of modern chemistry and an ability to carry out independent chemical research demonstrated through submission of an acceptable doctoral dissertation. The M.S. may be earned either through submission of an acceptable Master’s thesis (Plan I) or through an approved program of graduate course work and a comprehensive oral examination (Plan II). A Master’s degree is not a prerequisite for admission to the Ph.D. program.

　　Inorganic and organometallic chemistry research at UCI ranges from synthesis of organometallic complexes for organic synthesis and industrial catalysis to materials science based on supramolecular and macromolecular inorganic building blocks to the generation of greenhouse gases by metal-based enzymes. Students can obtain broad exposure to both instrumentation (e.g., multinuclear, high-resolution, and solid-state NMR, EPR, X-ray crystallography, magnetism, electrochemistry, optical spectroscopy, and photophysical methods) and experimental techniques (e.g., handling air sensitive compounds, thin film technology, protein engineering, and polymerization chemistry). Entry requirements for University of California - Irvine

Hold a bachelor?s degree (or equivalent) from a recognized academic institution with degree standards equivalent to those of the University of California

　　Have a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0
