About the course

Doctoral study in chemistry at Stanford University prepares students for research and teaching careers with diverse emphases in basic, life, medical, physical, energy, materials, and environmental sciences. Billions of years of chemical evolution on our planet have created a chemical library of immense size and diversity ? the Earth?s chemome. Scientists at Stanford are leading research directed at translating this library, creating fundamentally new knowledge about the origins and workings of life, and how molecules, molecular assemblies and metabolic pathways contribute to the chemistry and biology of living organisms. From the structure and function of molecules within a cell to the interaction of cells within an organism and inter-organismal biochemistry, this research is providing new insights into normal and abnormal biological function, and with that, new strategies for the prevention, detection and treatment of diseases. How to apply

Entry requirements for Stanford University

The University minimum TOEFL score is 600 (IBT 100), but the Chemistry Department is looking for a 108 or higher.

　　There are no minimum scores required for applying to the chemistry Ph.D. program, however, we do want to see a minimum of 108 on the TOEFL. The admissions committee evaluates each applicant?s potential for success based on all materials in the file, recommendation letters, test scores, transcripts, and personal statements. GRE exams are optional. It's best to get letters from referees who have observed your research promise.

　　Applicants from institutions outside the U.S. must hold the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor?s degree from A complete application includes the online application (plus statement of purpose) and the following supplementary materials:

　　three letters of recommendation (we value letters that speak to your lab experience and scientific creativity and potential to work independently to solve research problems)

　　statement of purpose (describe your research projects/skills/experience and specifically your research interests at Stanford, provide details and research group names)

　　official GRE scores including the general test and subject exam in chemistry (optional)

　　TOEFL scores, for applicants who have not studied in an English speaking country for at least two years leading to a BS or MS degree (we are looking for a score of 108 or higher)

　　one uploaded unofficial transcript from each university you have attended for one year or longer (two official transcripts from each university you have attended for one year or longer, if you are admitted)

　　Applicants may take the general GRE exams in the autumn prior to applying, or earlier. Per the statement above, all GREs are optional. There is also a TOEFL requirement for foreign applicants who have not studied in an English speaking country for at least two years leading to a BS or MS degree.
