About the course

The Department offers an M.S. and a Ph.D. in Chemistry. The Ph.D. is granted in recognition of breadth and depth of knowledge of the facts and theories of modern chemistry and an ability to carry out independent chemical research demonstrated through submission of an acceptable doctoral dissertation. The M.S. may be earned either through submission of an acceptable Master’s thesis (Plan I) or through an approved program of graduate course work and a comprehensive oral examination (Plan II). A Master’s degree is not a prerequisite for admission to the Ph.D. program.

　　Chemical biology at UCI focuses on understanding and manipulating the complicated chemical structures, reactions, and interactions of biology. Research projects include developing new spectroscopic methods for elucidating the structures of biomolecules, engineering and expressing novel proteins, mimicking biomaterials, studying electron transfer processes in proteins, using X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, optical microscopy and computer simulations to gain insight into biomolecules and biomolecular assemblies, inventing new chemical probes to address biomolecular interactions, controlling protein interactions and bioactivities, synthesizing biologically active compounds, and understanding the chemical basis for diseases. Entry requirements for University of California - Irvine

Hold a bachelor?s degree (or equivalent) from a recognized academic institution with degree standards equivalent to those of the University of California

　　Have a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0

　　Letters of Recommendation ? A minimum of three letters are required.

　　An overall score of 80 or higher is required for admission.

　　A speaking section score of 26 or higher is required for TA eligbility.

　　An overall score of 7 or higher, with a score of no less than 6 on any individual module, is required for admission.
