Not only are our chemical engineering faculty leading researchers and facilities continually improving with state-of-the-art upgrades and equipment, the culture of collegiality at the Smith School is unmatched. While you?re progressing toward your thesis and diploma, you?ll be surrounded by a community of scholars that is contributing to something greater and embracing the founding principles of Cornell University. Degree candidates are expected to pursue study and research that will give them a deeper comprehension of the basic and applied sciences and will develop initiative, originality, and creative ability. The thesis or dissertation may involve either research or special projects in such subjects as design, economics, or mathematical analysis. There is no language requirement for students majoring in chemical engineering.
The education of chemical engineers, and engineers more generally, prepared to solve complex problems that address societal, economic, environmental, and public health, safety, and welfare is an essential part of the engineering profession. Engineers must not only be able to create technical solutions but also do so ethically, with empathy, and with a recognition of how engineering plays a role in supporting equity (or not). Engineering education combines engineering contexts and education research to create new knowledge to understand and improve the development of engineers from P-12 (pre-school through final year of high school, i.e., primary and secondary education) through professional engineers with an emphasis on post-secondary education. It addresses key questions including: Who becomes an engineer What is engineering and who decides When do people become engineers and How can educators best support engineering learning Engineering education research conducted in CBE has direct applications in: Outreach to teach children about engineering and increase awareness of engineering careers Improving undergraduate and graduate education Diversifying the engineering workforce Understanding factors to support student success and pathways into and through engineering Scholarships - View all scholarships Internships
