About the course

The Smith School?s Ph.D. in chemical engineering will prepare you for careers in academia and research. The program is completed in four to five years, and students typically receive full funding. As your pursue your Ph.D., you?ll be prepared to make significant contributions to the field?and you?ll be in good company.

　　Not only are our chemical engineering faculty leading researchers and facilities continually improving with state-of-the-art upgrades and equipment, the culture of collegiality at the Smith School is unmatched. While you?re progressing toward your thesis and diploma, you?ll be surrounded by a community of scholars that is contributing to something greater and embracing the founding principles of Cornell University. Degree candidates are expected to pursue study and research that will give them a deeper comprehension of the basic and applied sciences and will develop initiative, originality, and creative ability. The thesis or dissertation may involve either research or special projects in such subjects as design, economics, or mathematical analysis. There is no language requirement for students majoring in chemical engineering.

　　Applications include computational and systems biology, energy materials, energy transformations and energy systems engineering, complex fluid modeling of colloids and gels, nanoparticle flows, electrospinning fibers, electronic materials design and properties There is a dynamic and thriving group of researchers in CBE who are focusing wholly, or in part, on computational projects. Much of their work is done under the auspices of the College-wide Cornell Institute for Computational Science and Engineering (ICSE). These projects are in the following areas: Computational and Systems Biology: protein conformational studies, biological network fragility, and synthetic biology, protobiology on frozen aqueous and non-aqueous extra-terrestrial worlds. How to apply

Entry requirements for Cornell University

Most applicants have satisfactorily completed the equivalent of the fundamental work required by an accredited curriculum in chemical engineering. Outstanding students with undergraduate majors in chemistry, materials science, microbiology, or physics are also encouraged to apply. For such students extra semester or summer term of residence is normally required. All applicants are required to submit GRE general test scores.

　　The Graduate School requires an overall band score of a 7.0 or higher on the IELTS.

　　The College of Engineering, of which we are a part, sets a minimum grade point average of 2.7 for admission. Our admissions committee takes a holistic view of applications therefore there is no minimum GPA or GRE.
