About the course

The Ph.D. program in Biological Sciences is an interdepartmental umbrella research program that provides opportunities for students to develop scholarly, innovative, and independent work. Courses are designed to strengthen and complement the student's research. An advisory committee helps guide each student in selecting classes and other learning experiences. Students are encouraged to present their research at national and international meetings and to publish in peer reviewed journals. Seminar series featuring prominent scientists expose students to exciting topics and help students develop collaborative contacts. During the course of their studies, each student must pass a qualifying exam, complete and defend an original dissertation, and present that dissertation work in a seminar.

　　BEES consists of over 60 distinguished faculty from ten departments in five Colleges at the University of Maryland, including adjuncts from several nearby research institutions, such as the Smithsonian Institution, United States Department of Agriculture, and the National Institutes of Health. Together these individuals have expertise in behavioral ecology, neuroethology, physiological ecology, community ecology, conservation biology, population ecology, evolutionary ecology, evolutionary development, quantitative genetics, population genetics, evolutionary genetics, molecular evolution, systematics, and functional genomics. How to apply

Entry requirements for University of Maryland - College Park

Earned a Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with at least a 3.0 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale)

　　At least one year of research experience

　　Strong letters of recommendation highlighting academic and research strengths

　　Demonstrated academic focus in a relevant or related scientific field
