About the course

The Ph.D. degree program in atmospheric sciences was initiated with the establishment of the Department of Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences in 1981. The Atmospheric Sciences program at NC State has grown significantly and the total research grants and contracts currently amount to several million dollars. The number of graduate students enrolled is about sixty of which over one-third are Ph.D. students. Research is an integral part of graduate study and should be a major consideration in the selection of a graduate program. An M.S. student should determine a general area of research within atmospheric sciences, while a Ph.D. applicant should consider in-depth research on a specific topic. At present, the faculty and graduate students? research in the atmospheric sciences program at NC State concentrates in the following areas: Air-sea interaction, Boundary layer meteorology, Climatology, Cloud chemistry and microphysics, Convective dynamics and physics, Geophysical fluid dynamics, Meteorological observations and instrumentation, Mesoscale processes,Satellite remote sensing, Storm structure and dynamics, Synoptic-dynamic meteorology, Tropical meteorology, Weather systems and forecasting. How to apply

Entry requirements for North Carolina State University - Raleigh

IELTS Academic-6.5 or higher (minimum of 6.5 in each sub score)

　　TOEFL IBT-80 or higher (minimum of 18 in each sub score)

　　TOEFL Paper Based-550 or higher.

　　To be considered for admission in full graduate standing, applicants must have:

　　(a) a four-year bachelor?s degree (or equivalent) from a regionally accredited college or university. Exceptions to standard accreditation may be granted for applicants with international degrees, including applicants with three-year degrees from institutions in Europe participating in the Bologna Process.

　　(b) a GPA of at least 3.00 (on a 4.00 scale) in their undergraduate degrees.

　　Applicants for this in-depth research program typically have obtained an M.S. degree and should submit, in addition to their basic application materials, evidence of their research potential/productivity. Such evidence may take the form of:

　　reprints of articles and abstracts

　　letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with your thesis research

　　academic transcripts and/or professional experience demonstrating such breadth that ideally you may immediately concentrate in your area of specialty.

　　Any background deficiencies determined by your graduate committee, together with most course work in your major and minor field, must be completed prior to your Preliminary Examination for admission to candidacy for the degree. Since the degree program emphasizes research, specifics of the graduate program are determined primarily by the student and his/her advisory committee so as to reflect the individual?s research goals.
