About the course
The DMA in composition offers a deep and broad study of composition and music to inspire students to create professional-level compositions with a variety of techniques and genres, and to grasp the knowledge needed to teach music at the college level. Areas of study include composition topics, music theory and history, and electroacoustic and computer music. Opportunities for research allow students to pursue projects of their own design, and the cognate allows for coursework in a secondary area of focus chosen in consultation with their advisor. Collaboration between musicians and with other disciplines is encouraged. The program is flexible enough to allow students to forge their own path, while providing a strong musical basis.
