About the course
The DMA program in Choral Music is typically a three-year degree program, the first two of which require the student to be in residence in Champaign-Urbana. The core of the program is a four semester sequence in which the students study conducting and choral literature, and perform in University choral ensembles. Students enjoy intensive work in orchestral conducting, as well as private voice lessons. Additional courses are required in musicology and/or music theory (the “Advanced Music Literature” courses in the grid below) and a secondary (“cognate”) area, as well as electives chosen by the student. Many students continue their residency for a third year, during which they perform recitals, study for and take their doctoral exams, and work on their final research project (dissertation or thesis).
