About the course

The Culinary Skills program will provide you with the foundation for an exciting career in the food service industry. Sharpen your skills in classic and contemporary à la carte cuisine, baking, pastry arts, global cuisine, cooking methods, understanding ingredients, food service principles, and safety and sanitation. You will also develop essential communication and computer application skills and be introduced to culinary management techniques. You will accomplish all of this through a combination of activity-based classroom instruction and practical application in our state-of-the-art culinary and pastry labs, and Bistro ‘67, our award-winning restaurant, where you will gain practical experience serving customers from the community. In addition, related business management studies and general education courses round out the program. You will learn through a combination of activity-based classroom instruction and practical application in our culinary, pastry and restaurant labs. You will also gain practical experience through our student-run, open-to-the-public restaurant and a field placement at a school-approved industry property. How to apply

Entry requirements for Durham College

Ontario Secondary School Diploma or Mature Student Status

　　Grade 12 English (C or U)

　　High school (secondary school) transcript.

　　Academic IELTS: 6.0, no band score less than 5.5

　　or

　　IBT TOEFL: 80, with minimum section scores of 20

　　The minimum admission requirement for postsecondary programs is one of the following:

　　Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with the majority (eight of 14) of your senior level (Grade 11 or higher) credits at the college preparation, university/college preparation or university preparation level

　　Equivalent secondary school diploma from another province or territory in Canada (Please note: A recognized equivalent to an OSSD may be accepted if you meet the levels, subjects and overall averages required for admission to the college. Generally the requirement is successful completion of a Grade 12 diploma except in Quebec where the equivalent is Secondary V) or

　　Equivalent secondary school diploma from outside of Canada. Applicants who have been educated outside of Canada must have their documents evaluated by a credential assessment service (ICAS) and submit proof of educational qualifications in order to determine if their level of achievement is equivalent to an OSSD.

　　Please note: only original or certified copies of academic records will be accepted. In addition, documents not written in English must be submitted with a certified, true translation. Evaluations could take several weeks to complete so please allow enough time for your results to be forwarded to your college choices in order to meet the admission deadlines.
