Coursework includes professional education courses along with Foundational Studies. It is strongly recommended that students enroll in another education content area in addition to special education to increase marketability after graduation (for example, elementary education, math education, or science education).

The new multi-million dollar Bayh College of Education facility features high-tech classrooms, a 475-seat auditorium, and comprehensive clinic.
Students participate in numerous semesters of field experiences, beginning with the first professional education course and continuing throughout the program. Field experiences include rural, suburban, and urban schools.
Professional development opportunities include experiences in the University's Early Childhood Education Center as well as the Professional Development Schools Program, a collaborative effort between the University and five area school districts.
