About the course

The objectives of the BS in Physics program with a concentration in Astronomy are to: (a) acquire knowledge of core principles in physics, (b) be able to justify and explain specific approaches to solving problems, (c) develop an understanding of research methodology in physics, (d) be able to effectively communicate scientific results in both oral and written reports, (e) develocomputational skills both in programming and data analysis, (f) be able to use specialized research equipment, (g) be able to collaborate with other students in an out of the laboratory and during problem-solving sessions, and (h) apply knowledge to independent research projects. The Astronomy concentration is designed for students interested in acquiring knowledge and pursue a graduate degree in the field of astronomy and astrophysics. The concentration provides rigorous theoretical and computational training covering subject topics such as stars, galaxies, exoplanets, black holes, cosmology, and astrobiology. How to apply

Entry requirements for University of Memphis

The following list of high school units represents the minimum high school academic requirements: English (4 units), Visual and/or Performing Arts (1 unit), Mathematics (3 units: Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II at least), Natural and Physical Science (2 units: at least one unit of Biology, Chemistry or Physics), Social Studies (2 units: 1 unit must be US History), Foreign Language (2 units: of the same language). All students must provide a standardized exam result (typically the ACT and/or SAT) in support of their application for admission. Students from non-English speaking countries must submit a TOEFL or the IELTS test, or complete the Intensive English for Internationals (IEI) program to demonstrate English proficiency. The minimum overall TOEFL score considered for undergraduate admission to the University of Memphis is 61 on the internet-based test (iBT) or 500 on the paper-based test (PBT).
