About the course
The Applied Physics and Engineering Track is designed for students who primarily wish to work in the industry in physics, computer, or engineering sectors or prepare for graduate school in Physics, Applied Physics or Engineering. The program consists of 70 units at lower division (27 in Physics, 15 chemistry, 24 math, 4 computer science) and a minimum of 57 units at upper division, totaling 127 units in the major and 40 units of breadth requirements. Relative to the B.S. Physics–Standard Track, the Applied Physics and Engineering Track replaces 16 units (Phys 136, one additional quarter of Phys 142, and two additional required physics electives) with 16 units of approved engineering courses including a minimum of 8 units at the upper-division level. Note that Computer Science requirement (CS 10A or CS 9P) can't be used to satisfy part of the Applied Physics and Engineering Track requirements. You can find a list of approved engineering courses here. The minimum total units is 165. The following schedule has 195 units with 6 general electives. Note that you must complete a minimum of 180 units to be eligible for graduation. Students who wish to take more than 216 units must receive permission from the associate dean. How to apply
Entry requirements for University of California
If English is not the applicant’s native language, or the language of instruction at school, English proficiency must be demonstrated in one of these ways:
• Pass the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a score of 80 or higher (iBT).
• Pass the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a score of 600 or higher on the Paper Based Test (PBT).
• Pass the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with a score of 6.5 or higher.
• Score 560 or higher on the Writing section of the SAT or 31 or higher on the new SAT Writing and Language test.
• Score 24 or higher on the combined ACT English/Writing or English Language Arts (ELA).
• Achieve a score of 3, 4 or 5 on the AP Exam in English Language and Composition or English Literature and Composition.
• Achieve a score of 6 or 7 on the International Baccalaureate (IB) Higher Level Examination in English (Language A).
• Complete a rigorous set of courses in secondary school (Grades 9–12). Complete a high level of academic achievement: To meet minimum requirements to be considered for UC Riverside selection, you must earn a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.4 on a 4.0 scale (equivalent to an 85 percent on a 100 percent scale).
