About the course

The Music Department is the steward of a program of musical studies that is inclusive of many musics, comprehensive of modes of inquiry and ways of knowing, and connected to the academic and social life on the university. Our program includes Western art music (classical music), non-Western music (world music, ethnic music, folk music, traditional music), and American music (film music, gospel music, jazz, musical theater, and popular music). Faculty and students in the Music Department engage in musical study through the disciplines of Composition, Ethnomusicology, Music Theory, Musicology, Musical Science and Engineering, and Performance. Undergraduate students may major and/or minor in Music, the department's courses also fulfill credits towards graduation and fulfill elective requirements for many other programs of study. Participation in the musical activities of the department offers to students enriching artistic experiences and satisfying social encounters. The flexible nature of the program attracts students who plan to pursue professional careers in some aspect of music, as well as students who would like to broaden their knowledge or enhance their performance capabilities without making music their primary focus of study. Students involved in the program with goals that a major in music alone would not satisfy either double major in music and another subject, minor in music, or simply participate in the department's academic and performance courses. Every aspect of the department's program is open to all members of the Tufts community.Tufts provides an extraordinarily vibrant community for students looking to explore music in all its forms. Our program combines the resources of a small conservatory with the strengths and rigors of a world-renowned scholarly and performance faculty. The Music department offers programs of study across the full diversity of musical styles and modes of inquiry, and undergraduates can find their musical voices through classes in composition, performance, theory, history, ethnomusicology, technology, and cultural studies. Our goal to be inclusive, comprehensive, and connected impacts everything we do. We want all students to feel welcome and challenged when they participate in our program. The Music department's theory program is distinctive in its inclusion of Western and non-Western music. The diverse range of theory courses include African music systems, Arab music systems, film and video game music, jazz theory and improvisation, popular music and songwriting, musicianship skills, and Western tonal theory.
