About the course
This program is designed for individuals who want to become special education teachers. The program may be completed at the undergraduate or graduate level. In addition to earning a Bachelors of Science or a Master’s of Education, individuals who complete the program also qualify for the Learning and Behavior Specialist I (LBSI) initial teaching license in Illinois. This is a full-time, on-campus program.Learning & Behavior Specialist I (LBS I) program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign prepares highly qualified, innovative special education teachers. At the end of this 4-year program graduates exit with a Bachelor of Science and a LBSI initial teaching license. This license allows graduates to teach children ages 3 to 21 with any disability (e.g., learning disabilities, social or emotional disabilities, autism, intellectual disability, physical disabilities, multiple disabilities) in a range of educational settings. Prior to proceeding to student teaching in an Illinois Education Preparation Program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, prospective candidates must take and pass an Illinois approved test of basic skills. Approved tests consist of the Illinois Test of Academic Proficiency (TAP), ACT or SAT with approved scores.
