About the course

Today's environmental problems — think climate change, water quality and availability, human health, forest management and conservation — are increasingly complex and involve vast amounts of data. Environmental Data Science majors can help address these challenges by mastering the methods and developing the tools needed to translate complex data into usable facts and figures. You'll develop analytical, decision-making, and data modeling skills that are critical for the job market and for pursing ongoing research to solve complex problems. Students majoring in environmental informatics take core courses in topics such as forest science, geospatial analysis, environmental economics, and natural resources policy. Additional computation courses in the following areas are also required: business analytics and database technology, remote sensing, systems development, programming, forest photogrammetry, data science, and statistics. How to apply

Entry requirements for Virginia Tech

Before you can be considered for freshman admission, you must complete:

　　3 units of math (includes algebra I, geometry, and algebra II)

　　2 units of laboratory science (chosen from biology, chemistry or physics)

　　additional academic units (foreign language is highly recommended)

　　Students taking the IELTS must obtain a score of at least 6.5, with no subscore below 6.5 to be considered for admission to Virginia Tech.

　　Students taking the PTE must obtain a score of at least 53.

　　Depending on the type of TOEFL used, Virginia Tech expects students to have scores of:

　　Internet-based test: at least 80, with no section sub-score less than 16

　　Computer-based test: at least 233

　　Paper-based test: at least 550

　　Students taking the Duolingo exam must obtain a score of at least 105 or higher.

　　Receipt of all documents required before credit can be awarded.

　　Letters of Recommendation are not a part of the Virginia Tech application.

　　Completed applications will receive priority in the review process. It is critical to meet the deadlines for your application. The university reserves the right to withdraw, without notice, any application that is not complete by the deadline.
