About the course

The English as a Second Language (ESL) Program is available as a major or a minor. An ESL major is for students who plan to teach English to non-native speakers from birth to age 21, in PK through 12th grade. Students must select the Early Childhood through Adolescence ESL major for grades PK through 12th grade. How to apply

Entry requirements for University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee

Application to the English as a Second Language program requires satisfactory completion of the requirements listed below. For more information about the application process, visit our website at: http://uwm.edu/education/academics/second-language/.

  English Composition: Achieve a placement level of 4 or higher on the English Placement Test, or complete ENGLISH 102 or an equivalent with a grade of C or better.

  Mathematics Skills: Achieve a placement level of 30 or higher on the Math Placement Test, or complete MATH 102, MATH 103, MATH 105, MATH 108, MATH 175, or an equivalent, with a grade of C or better. Note: MATH 103 or MATH 105 are recommended as they also meet core curriculum requirements.

  Completion of CURRINS 300 , Introduction to Teaching, with a grade of C or better.

  Completion of COMMUN 103 with a grade of C or better.

  A 2.75 minimum GPA in all English as a Second Language content courses completed prior to program admission.

  A 2.5 minimum GPA in all UWM and transfer courses at time of admission application.

  A minimum of 48 credits (UWM and transfer credits) at the time of admission application. It is not required to have all content area courses completed at the time of application.

  All applicants whose native language is not English must provide proof of English proficiency in one of the following ways:

  An approved test score that meets the requirement for regular or conditional admission.

  University study: Completion of at least 18 months of full-time, for-credit academic study (approximately three semesters) at a recognized or accredited institution of higher education whose language of instruction is English immediately prior to enrollment at UWM.

  Secondary/high school study: Proof of completion of the last two years of secondary/high school at an institution whose language of instruction is English immediately prior to enrollment at UWM.

  Provide transcripts for all study, including secondary/high school and all university/college study. If the transcript is not issued in English, include an English translation.
