About the course
The astronomy and astrophysics honours specialisation is intended for students who have a foundational knowledge of the field and are interested in taking specialist courses and undertaking an independent research project under the direction of a supervisor. The honours specialisation is usually taken full time for two consecutive semesters and includes research training, in-depth analysis of current concepts in the field as well as a substantial research project culminating in the production of a thesis. Honours is a solid foundation in the basics of research, and can be an entry to careers in astrophysics, physics, applied mathematics, statistics, science communication, computer science, or a pathway to a PhD in Astronomy and Astrophysics.
Learning Outcomes
Plan and engage in an independent and sustained critical investigation of a chosen research topic to generate new knowledge in an area of astronomy and astrophysics.
Systematically evaluate relevant theory and concepts in astronomy and astrophysics, relate these to appropriate methodologies and evidence and draw appropriate conclusions.

How to apply
Entry requirements for The Australian National University
An AQF Level 7 Bachelor of Science Degree or equivalent completed within the last two years
with a weighted average mark equivalent to an ANU 70 per cent calculated from the 36 units ie 0.75 EFTSL of courses in the discipline cognate to the honours specialisation excluding 1000-level courses ie introductory undergraduate courses with the highest marks
And the satisfaction of any admission requirements described in the relevant honours specialisation
IELTS - Overall score - 6.5, Reading - 6.0, Writing - 6.0, Listening - 6.0, Speaking - 6.0.
TOEFL IBT - Overall score - 80, Reading - 20, Writing - 20, Listening - 18, Speaking - 18.
