About the course

The composition major gives students who wish to develop craft in the manipulation of musical materials a thorough understanding of contemporary harmonic, melodic, rhythmic, contrapuntal, and timbral elements. Over four years, composition majors study with members of the composition faculty on a rotating basis. Composition majors take required lessons on an instrument or voice in faculty studios and participate in student ensembles. The Eastman Composition Department is devoted to teaching students who wish to pursue a professional and/or academic career in concert and computer music composition. We have no stylistic or sectarian agendas, our goal is to help students learn to write the music that inspires and interests them. Our programs of study equip students with a thorough knowledge of all contemporary forms of musical expression and the ability to present their personal style in each of them. In order to enable the student to explore the wide range of today?s diverse compositional styles and media, it is the policy of the the Department to rotate the faculty and students so that no student ordinarily studies with the same teacher for more than one year during a period of three years. Entry requirements for University of Rochester

High school transcript. Official transcripts from all schools attended must be submitted. Transcripts not in English must be sent with certified translations.. SAT or ACT scores are welcome, but are only required only for home-schooled students.Pre-screen Recording: required for all Jazz instruments, Piano (performance majors only), plus the following instruments (regardless of major) Cello, Clarinet, Flute, Percussion, Saxophone, Trombone, Violin, and Voice.
