About the course

BLA Concentration in Race and Ethnic Studies focuses on race and ethnicity as evolving social constructions shaped by many factors, including labor, politics, religion, nationality, gender, and culture. The concentration will encourage students to explore race and ethnicity from a variety of disciplinary approaches and to examine the histories of various racial and ethnic groups. UMass Lowell students will graduate knowing how to contribute to a more humane and civil society in which diversity is acknowledged and celebrated.

This concentration offers study across a range of disciplines in the humanities, social sciences, education, and other units. The concentration will help students strengthen thinking and research skills already integral to the College of Fine Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, Core Curriculum, and the BLA program. Many of the courses also fulfill the Essential Learning Outcomes of Diversity and Cultural Awareness, Social Responsibility and Ethics, and Information Literacy.
