About the course
Economics is the study of human behaviour related to the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services, by means of markets, businesses or other institutions. As individuals, communities, companies and governments, we face choices every day, weighing up the costs and benefits of our decisions. This program provides the necessary skills to understand and explain how economic incentives and markets work, and how prices are formed. It provides strong statistical modelling and data analysis as well as an extensive conceptual toolkit to equip you to see the world through an economic lens. You will graduate with the skills, knowledge and abilities to think like an economist. Initially, you'll develop core economic skills through a set of compulsory courses. Then you'll study either econometrics or how economics shapes areas such as public policy, business and industry, trade and the environment. When you graduate, you'll be in high demand. You could work as an analyst, adviser, consultant, economist or researcher in a huge range of industries. Our past graduates have worked in areas including consulting, infrastructure, environmental management, international finance, investment and trade, natural resources, health, treasury and statistics.
The economics and public policy major is an economics-centred, multidisciplinary major, designed to provide students with an opportunity to understand how government intervention affects the economy in an increasingly globalised world. The major focuses on the economic analytical tools needed to design and evaluate public policies. Core courses in public finance and regulatory economics emphasise the rationale for government intervention and the theoretical framework that underpins the nature of such intervention. Elective courses include advanced microeconomics, macroeconomics, applied econometrics and a range of policy oriented courses. The major also provides students with the necessary multidisciplinary approaches to deal with public policy problems, including elective courses in political sciences.
