Bachelor of Arts in Music - Composition

About the course

In the University of Pittsburgh Department of Music, we make music through composition, improvisation, and performance, and explore music?s meaning in the structure of individual works, the relationships between them, and their place in the cultures that produce them. The sensory and practical cannot be separated from the theoretical and abstract in the musician?s world. Thus, music enjoys a special place in our endeavor to understand ourselves. This track is intended for students interested primarily in creating music of any genre, acoustic or electroacoustic. A solid background in music history, music theory (including tonal harmony and 20th-21st century techniques) and musicianship is essential for composers, as is competence on an instrument or voice. Students will have the opportunity to hear their music read or performed by guest performers and ensembles as well as groups such as the University Orchestra. Students will develop their individual musical voices through mentorship by faculty and will create a final portfolio of their compositional work. How to apply

Entry requirements for University of Pittsburgh

Letters of Recommendation- While we appreciate your teachers, counselors, and other mentors taking the time to write recommendation letters on your behalf, we find letters are beneficial in very limited circumstances (for example: providing context for variance in your overall academic performance).

Completed online application for admission. This can be the University of Pittsburgh Application, the Common Application, or the Coalition Application – we accept all three and do not prefer one over the other. Please choose the one that is best for you!

  $55 application fee.

High school academic information. You can send us a transcript, but we encourage you to submit our Self-Reported Academic Record (SRAR) instead. Completing the SRAR is easy – just fill it out to match your transcript exactly – and it speeds up your application processing time.

Official SAT or ACT results. We’re a test-friendly institution, which means that we will take your highest ACT composite score and your highest SAT superscore. We don’t require the SAT Essay or ACT Writing scores.

Applicants are reviewed holistically, however, and those with a 95-99 TOEFL and a solid academic record will be given strong consideration in the admissions process for the Pittsburgh campus
