About the course

Language is a means of social communication and a unique property of the human mind. Linguistics - the scientific study of language - has a broad appeal to students who are interested in the social sciences, the humanities, computer science, or the life sciences. The undergraduate program in linguistics helps students understand the diversity of human modes of communication, the social and psychological origins of language, and the processes by which languages are learned and lost. A major in linguistics provides students with a focused but broad-based education in the liberal arts. In addition, the way linguists think about their subject has greatly influenced the development of other disciplines such as anthropology, computer science, language teaching, philosophy, psychology, and sociology. A degree in linguistics will be of great value to students intending to pursue careers in those fields.

How to apply

Entry requirements for Southern Illinois University - Carbondale

A completed application for admission.

　　A $40 non-refundable application fee. Fees may be waived for students who meet certain income levels. See your high school guidance counselor for details.

　　Current, official transcripts from each high school and college you’ve attended. All transcripts must be issued within the last 30 days and be contained in official sealed envelopes or sent through an electronic transcript system. A final high school transcript will be required upon graduation and completion of all high school course work.

　　An official copy of ACT or SAT scores. These must be sent directly from the testing organization or listed on your official high school transcript. Our school codes are 1144 for ACT and 1726 for SAT.

　　TOEFL - 68 on the internet based test

　　TOEFL - 520 on the paper-based test (We do not accept the revised paper based test)
