Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies - Sustainability, Policy, and Equity

About the course

The Environmental Studies major requires the completion of five core courses, plus five courses in any one track, and an internship. The core curriculum requires students to master basic scientific principles of environmental processes, to examine interactions between technology and the environment, and to explore the societal context for implementing environmental policy. The environmental studies program is offered only as a second major, and is set up in such a way that it complements a wide range of primary majors.Sustainability, Policy, and Equity focuses on environmental sustainability and environmental justice and requires that students integrate economics, policy, human well being (e.g., anthropology or sociology). Sustainability was developed to describe human practices that actively protect and do not negatively affect the earth natural ecosystem's ability to support healthy biological systems and human well being now and in the future. Human practices have environmental, economic, and social dimensions that need to be considered in the context of sustainability. Clearly, sustainability is truly multi-dimensional and multi-disciplinary. The goal of this curriculum track is to maximize students' exposure to as many of these dimensions as possible.
