About the course
The Department of Economics at American University prepares graduates to find answers to the important economic questions that face our global society, understanding economic problems in their domestic and international contexts. The university?s location in Washington, DC assists students and graduates in obtaining employment and internships in leading economic institutions, including the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, research institutes, and the treasury, labor, and commerce departments. The Department of Economics embraces a pluralistic approach to economics that includes neoclassical, Keynesian, and institutional economics as well as political economy. International economic issues are emphasized, as do such socially-important topics as the economic analysis of gender and studies of economic growth and income distribution. The study of economic history, the history of economic thought, and alternative economic methodologies alert students to divergent perspectives in economics and to the role of institutions in economic outcomes.
