About the course

Develop the practical skills and expertise needed to work in a wide range of sports, health and exercise science fields.

  During our three year programme you will study theory, participate in practical sessions and undertaken work placements in your chosen specialisation of sport and exercise science. Your studies will allow you to evaluate, facilitate and/or enhance sport and exercise performance in a wide range of contexts using current scientific principles and technologies. Part-time up to 6 years.

  Sport scientists work in a variety of laboratory and field settings to optimise human capability.

  This specialisation opens up a wide range of possibilities in the health and sports science related fields. Opportunities range from working as a performance analyst, strength and conditioning specialist, sports development, a consultant working with the general population and athletes or going on to further studies. How to apply

Entry requirements for Ara Institute of Canterbury Limited

New Zealand University Entrance: NCEA Level 3 (60 credits at level 3 and 20 credits at level 2 or higher) which must include: 14 credits at Level 3 in each of:

  biology or human biology or physical education

  another subject, preferably core health/health education, physics, statistics, mathematics, chemistry, geography, home economics and psychology. (Human Nutrition specialisation applicants must have a minimum of 14 credits in Chemistry at Level 2)

  one other subject from the list of approved subjects.

  Literacy - 10 credits at Level 2 or above, made up of 5 credits in reading, 5 credits in writing and

  Numeracy - 10 credits at Level 1 or above (specified achievement standards, or unit standards 26623, 26626, 26627).

  Successful completion of New Zealand Certificate in Exercise (Level 4).New Zealand Certificate in Study and Career Preparation (Level 4) Ara Applied Science Pathway or equivalent.If you show that you have equivalent skills for tertiary study gained through study, work and/or life experience, you may be able to gain alternative entry.

  IELTS - Academic score of 6 with no band score lower than 5.5.TOEFL Paper-based Test (pBT) - Score of 550 (with an essay score of 5 TWE).TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) - Score of 60 (with a writing score of 18).
